What does a publihser do?

Submission Guidelines

Our first request is the you READ some of the works we have previously published. This is the best way for prospective authors to get a feel for the types of work we will publish as well as our editor's tastes and likes in a manuscript. We are also a small publishing company without the resources of the bigger companies. If we accept your manuscript for publication, we will do everything we can to promote your work; however, we expect the AUTHOR to be very involved in all promotions, including being the primary person who will reach out to set up interviews, books events, readings, book sales, etc. We provide assistance and resources where we can, but if you expect us to do EVERYTHING after you have been published, then you are not the right fit for us.

Artemesia Publishing publishes nonfiction and fiction books for general audiences, both adults and children. We will consider proposals for projects in most genres, however we will not accept any work that contains erotica, sexually explicit, or other hard-core material. We will accept proposals for both fiction and non-fiction adult books and children's books. We encourage you to review the Titles section of our website to help determine whether your book is appropriate for our publishing goals.

STANDARDS: We accept only well-written, entertaining manuscripts that can capture a reader's attention. Your book must be both informative and engaging to the reader, written in lively, lucid prose. For nonfiction books the topic must have broad, long-term appeal. The sources you rely on must be thoroughly documented and not infringe on any existing copyrights. You are responsible for supplying all photographs, maps, and other graphics your book may need. For fiction books (including children's books) the story must be unique and engaging, capturing the reader's attention and not be something seen a thousand times before.

PROPOSALS: We accept unsolicited proposals from authors and literary agents. Please do not send your entire manuscript unless we ask for it. Submit a cover letter telling us who you are (including your credentials and publishing history), what your manuscript is about, who your target audience is, how your book differs from competing works, and why you think Artemesia Publishing should publish your book. Most importantly, tell us what you will do to help market your book. Indicate the length of the book as well as the number of any illustrations or photographs, whether they are color or black and white, and who owns the rights. Include an outline or table of contents, a sample of the manuscript (one or two chapters, double spaced), a core bibliography (if necessary), photocopied examples of the artwork you plan to use, and an SASE to ensure safe return of your materials. Please do not send your submission electronically. Normally we can respond to your proposal within six to eight weeks if you follow these guidelines. Proposals that are sent to us that do not follow these guidelines will not be read and will not be replied to. Please call or email first if you have any questions.
